METABOLIC TESTING

Metabolic testing provides measurable insight into how your body uses energy at rest. Although metabolism is widely discussed, many people rely on estimates rather than objective data. Accurate metabolic testing establishes a baseline that supports weight management, metabolic health, sports performance, diabetes management, and other medical wellness conditions. Nutrition strategies are then developed using measured metabolic data. This approach supports realistic calorie targets, energy balance, and long-term wellness goals.

Many clients seek metabolic testing when working with a dietitian or nutritionist for weight loss or weight management in Charlotte, NC, and surrounding areas. Objective data allows nutrition care to be tailored to real energy needs rather than assumptions.

During perimenopause and postmenopause, hormonal changes and weight redistribution can make health management challenging. Having your metabolism tested can be highly effective in determining how your nutritional needs may be changing during this time.

After the test, our registered dietitians can provide metabolic support and guide individualized nutrition planning through telehealth and in-person care for clients in Charlotte, NC, Raleigh, NC, Savannah, GA, Columbia, SC, and additional telehealth states.

METABOLIC TESTING APPOINTMENT

What to Expect

We use Microlife BodyGem Calorimeters which are used by hospitals, universities, and major weight management centers, to determine accurate RMR measurements. You will breathe into this small handheld device, and the test should take 10-15 minutes. The RD will then give you an overview of your results.

How to Prepare

To prepare for the test and ensure accurate results, for at least 4 hours prior to the test you must follow the following rules:

  • Fasting – No food or drink other than water
  • Avoid exercise – Please refrain from any vigorous exercise.
  • No caffeine, nicotine, or stimulant supplements – These can negatively impact your results.
  • Medications – Do not stop prescribed medications unless instructed by your healthcare provider. Let us know in advance if you take stimulant medications.

The test is $135. A credit card is required when booking an appointment. The card will be charged at the time of the appointment. Insurance does not cover this metabolic test.
